Lion Encounter

Operating on a private game reserve adjacent to the Zambezi National Park, an intimate morning spent at Lion Encounter is a spectacular African experience. Lion Encounters is a conservation programme based in Victoria Falls, dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the African lion. With a devastating 90% decline in lion numbers over the last 30 years, this programme works towards the ethical reintroduction of captive-bred African lions, and particularly their offspring, into the wild.

As stage one of the four-part African Lion Rehabilitation & Release into the Wild Programme, Lion Encounters offers the unique opportunity of walking alongside these magnificent lions. Gaze upon and interact with these incredible creatures as they play, learn to hunt and prepare for their release into the wild. On these walks, the lion cubs often come across a wide range of wildlife, which allows to practice stalking and hunting.

What to Expect

On some occasions, guests have been known to witness the cubs hunt and kill bushbuck, wildebeest, impala, and more first-hand. At times, with the discretion of the experienced guides, the lions may rest- allowing you a close encounter and a once in a lifetime photo opportunity.

Not only will you get the opportunity to walk alongside these incredible animals, but the well-trained team of guides will educate you on the lion’s natural environment, threats and behaviour. The placement of Lion Encounters also allows guests an opportunity to see several of Africa’s other keystone species. Lion Encounters is supported by ALERT, a programme which aims to unite communities and policy makers to raise awareness about lion conservation. For a full description of the ALERT programme, along with answers to some frequently asked questions, visit their website at www.lionalert.org.

Each with their own individual personality, the lions at Lion Encounters have something truly special to offer. Walk alongside these magnificent Kings of Beasts, volunteer with the inspiring team of conservationists or contribute to this increasingly important cause and you’ll leave with moments that you won’t soon forget.
