Zambezi River Boarding

Get your heart racing and experience the thrill of a lifetime when you take on the Middle Zambezi River rapids with nothing more than a body board, wetsuit, life jacket, helmet and fins. The latest innovation in adrenalin sports, river boarding in Victoria Falls is increasingly becoming one of the most popular activities around, attracting adventurers from both near and far.

Most tour operators in Victoria Falls combine river boarding and white water rafting, allowing clients to safely navigate the rapids too dangerous for river boarding. What’s more, you’ll get to experience the best of both worlds. Different from white water rafting, river boarding allows you an exhilarating sense of freedom as you wrestle the rapids below Victoria Falls. After adequate guidance from a qualified instructor, take complete control of your own board, and confront the currents and fresh water standing waves head on.

With fast-moving rapids, a high volume of water, and deep channels, this stretch of the Zambezi River provides plenty of challenges, sure to keep you on your toes. The rapids range from Grave III to Grade V, as the river carves its way through the mighty Batoka Gorge. The instructors know the river well and will inform you when to swap between boarding and rafting, allowing you to get the most amount of fun from your experience, whilst still ensuring you feel safe.

What to Expect

As with white water rafting, river boarding is very much dependant on the level of the Zambezi River. Due to extreme water volumes at certain times of the year, river boarding in Victoria Falls is mainly run in the Low Water Season (September – December), but can occasionally be booked on request in the High Water Season. During the Low Water months take on rapids 1 to 19, with interesting names such as The Bridge, The Devil Toilet Bowl and Gullivers Travels. During the High Water Season, however, clients are restricted to rapids 11 to 25.

Important to note is that clients must be 13 years or older to take part in this activity, must have basic swimming skills, be of a reasonable fitness, and be both relaxed and confident in the water.
